The Biography
Born and raised in Mumbai, Anjali Malpani was an exceptional student from an early age, consistently ranking first in school. She studied medicine at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital, Mumbai, where she first encountered the deep stigma and silence surrounding infertility. Recognising a critical gap in both medical training and patient awareness, she chose to specialise in fertility medicine at a time when infertility was barely addressed in public hospitals.
In 1989, she was awarded a prestigious international travelling fellowship and trained at King’s College London, gaining exposure to advanced fertility practices and global best standards. She returned to India determined to build accessible, ethical, and science-driven fertility care.

Visionary
Working to destigmatize infertility as a medical condition.
In 1990, she established India’s first private fertility clinic and launched the country’s first sperm bank, a landmark moment that helped bring infertility out of the shadows. She went on to lead several pathbreaking medical firsts in the country, including India’s first GIFT pregnancy (1991), first surrogacy pregnancy (1993), and first TESE ICSI pregnancy (1996).
Beyond clinical practice, Anjali Malpani has been a strong advocate for patient education and emotional support. In 1997, she founded Infertility Friends, India’s first support group for infertile couples, and launched India’s first medical website well before online health education became widespread.
A Professor Emeritus at KEM Hospital, Anjali Malpani continues to work toward destigmatising infertility, emphasising that it is a medical condition deserving empathy, openness, and evidence-based treatment. SHE transforms silence into science, and stigma into hope.
